The Time Given Us
Tonight I was watching "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" for about the seventh or eighth time. The Ring Trilogy was one of my favorite sets of books as a young teen and I was thrilled when I heard they were making movies based on these books.
One of my favorite quotes from the first movie happens when Gandalf the Gray is talking to Frodo Baggins as they sit in the dwarf mines trying to determine which way they should go. Frodo comments how he wishes that the ring had never come to him and that none of the problems had ever happened to him. Gandalf replies, "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
Have you decided what to do with the time that is given to you? Many people spend their entire lives just searching for the purpose to their life. While everyone has a purpose for life that is unique to them, we all have a common purpose: to have fellowship with God and bring Him glory. Many people hate to hear that this is their purpose. They think that living for the sole purpose of bringing glory to God sounds meaningless or even belittling. Some think it is rather selfish of God. Regardless, nobody will find their individual purpose for life until they are willing to accept why God created humans.
Why is it so difficult for most people to submit themselves to the purpose that God has for them? After all, He created each of us. He created everything we see, so why can we not accept that He is greater than we are and that His ways are greater than ours. Perhaps too many people would rather make themselves the god of their own life than accept that there is someone greater than them who knows what is best for them. In other words, too many people never grow beyond the mental capacity of a teenager...they think they know best and know more than anyone else.
I challenge you to read Job chapters 38 & 39 and then see what you think about God. Don't waste your entire life searching for your purpose and have no time left to do that which you have been made to do.
