Created to Create
God created us for a purpose. That purpose has been debated and discussed for many years. Some do not even realize that they are looking for their God-given purpose. They call it searching for the “Meaning of Life.” There may be many reasons why God created us, but we know that the primary reason was so that He could have fellowship with us. He wanted to spend time with us, and He still does. But I wanted to focus on another purpose for our creation.
God created us as creative beings. Humans are the only creation that has the ability to create. Dolphins may be as smart as scientists say, but they cannot create. There are no dolphin highways underwater. There are no great statues or works of art made by dolphins. Some may point to bees and their beehives or to beavers and their dams, but these are not a true form of creativity. They do not create variations of their homes. They have been designed with an instinctive nature about how to build their homes. But God did create us to be creative and He delights in our creations.
Look at the beauty of the Sistine Chapel or the grandeur of the Egyptian Sphinx. Consider the wonder of the Beethoven Symphonies or Handel’s Messiah or Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto. See how far we can travel because of airplanes, trains, and cars. Imagine a world without chocolate cake or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Even the very things that have enabled us to live longer: water reclamation, sewer systems, soap, medical cures, etc., they were all creations by created beings.
The bible tells us that God made us in His image. Since He is the Creator and we were made in His image, then it only stands to reason that we would also be creative. Sometimes humans take that creativity a little too far and believe that they are equal with God. There were some scientists that believed that had become so smart that they no longer needed God. They had recently discovered how to create life by cloning sheep. They started to brag to God about their abilities. God responded by offering them a challenge. “If you are so smart, then create a human being the same way I did, using only the ingredients found in dirt.” The scientists discussed this with each other and agreed. One scientist bent down to scoop up a handful of dirt when God said, “No, no, no. Get your own dirt.”
Our example for creativity is God. How will you then use your creativity? If you have a talent or ability that is not being used for ministry, speak to someone at your church about how you can use that creative talent to bring glory to God.
